I had something I wanted to write about, but this topic seems to me the more relevant. It’s Super Bowl Sunday. Football has been on my mind for obvious reasons. And I think this is very relevant to building winning sports teams AND business teams.

There’s no question that everybody wants the greatest talent. We all want the Michael Jordan’s, Ronnie Lott’s and Steve Jobs. We want people who will come in and either win or attract winners, preferably both. At the end of the day, you know putting the greatest product out, involves having the best team within.

I’ve always considered myself a hard worker. Being talented definitely helped, but working hard was how I proved to myself, and others, that I belonged. Sometimes talent doesn’t always have to show that work ethic. They believe that the proof is in their numbers or rankings. Which one do you think winning teams are filled with? My guess, it’s the latter. It’s the hard workers.

I may be biased, well actually I am. But I can be, this is my personal blog. I haven’t always been the most talented person. Not to talk down on myself, I have many gifts that I hope to put out into the world on a daily basis. But I don’ think that I am quite as equipped as I will be in the future. I guess we all put so much pressure on ourselves to be who we’re becoming, right now.

The story of Michael Jordan is so cliche, but it’s one of my personal favorites. Jordan wasn’t always the greatest basketball player. He wasn’t even good enough to make his high school team at one point. What he did have, was determination. He knew what he had the potential to become, and every day he went out and worked. A combination of incremental improvements and confidence results makes one unstoppable. It’s just a difficult road to travel.

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.”
― Michael Jordan

Truth be told, I’m trying to win championships. If you look at the two team’s in the Super Bowl today, you’re not going to see a lot of big names. Don’t get me wrong, there are some tremendous athletes out on that field. Heck, they’re in the NFL AND in the Super Bowl. But I have to agree with MJ on this one, teamwork, and intelligence win championships. A great team, with great coaches.
